Fighting Knives

FK-17 Personalized Luftwaffe Boot Knife
Real solid example of a early fighting knife. This particular example is personalized with the guys last name. This one has good hardwood grip plates and a solid steel hilt. The grip plates are crack and chip-free with some staining top the edges. The blade shows wear and sharpening but maintains it's original shape. The scabbard retains about 95% of original paint and is dent-free. The clip functions fine. Exc

BA-147 S98nA Bayonet
Here's an unmarked example. The long thin plated pipe backed blade shows wear and age. The scabbard is a steel mounted, leather bodied example. The leather shows minor age and scuffs and could use a treatment with wax to dress it up. There are two dressed lines running down both sides in the German tradition. All the stitches are tight and intact. The nickel scalloped edge fittings are assembled to the leather with staples. These fitting show light age. They are dent free. Grooved two piece oak grip plates are chip and crack-free and secured with spanner bolts. These two piece plates date the bayo as being produced some time between 1902 and  the switch over to the S98/05 that started approx 1905. The hilt has wear and evidence of use. The hilt is plated. Finally the frog is beat but it's there so I include it.  Exc+

BA-150 SG 98/05aA (Butcher) by Waffenfabrik Mauser-A.G.
Here's a good example with a nice blade by an unusual maker. The blade is a WWI period example. It's a sawback with the "saw" part factory removed. The blade does have some sharpening but a good job was done and the whole blade is real clean. The spine carries a crowned gothic letter that's an inspection mark over an Imperial crown and the years of manufacture "16". The reverse is also maker marked by the the most famous of German Arms manufacturers along with the location Oberndorfand. Never seen this before. The scabbard is a blued example showing lots of wear, hits, small dents and bruises especially to towards the ball. The throat retaining screw is missing and I've not got one hanging about at this time. The scabbard reverse is maker marked matching the riccasso. Grooved hardwood grip plates are chip and crack-free and secured with spanner bolts. They do have wear and bruises and stains. The flash-guard is undamaged. A nice example to display with the right gun. Exc++

K98-48 S/175.G by F.W.Höller-1935
Tough to find early vintage K98 bayo's. Nice clean blade has a nicely finished blue finish. It is sharpened. It retains 90% of the factory bluing with just a bit of thinning. The blade is serialized 7347 NOT matching the scabbard. Hardwood grip plates show wear scratches and bruises. Hilt is free of oxidizing and does show wear and use. The scabbard shows original anodizing and wear that is progressively more toward the tip. The lower end has bruises and bumps and small dents. The single side screw is intact and unbuggered. Rates Exc

Tough to find early vintage K98 bayo's. Blade shows age and evidence of cleaning. It is NOT sharpened. The blade is serialized 389 almost matching the scabbard which is marked 339. Hardwood grip plates show wear stains and bruises. Hilt shows matching wear and use. The scabbard fits perfect and shows wear but no dents of abuse. The single side screw is lost. The blade and the scabbard are off one digit, a factory error, who knows but certainly these have been together a long long time. Rates Exc+

K98-34 K98 Bayonet by E. Pack 1939
Always a pleasure to examine Pack product, they always produced a quality product and this is not exception. Blade is a perfectly ground blued example with a deep black finish. It retains 90% of the factory bluing with runner wear and evidence of where the runners rested. The blade spine is "39clc" stamped indicating 1939 manufacture. It is serialized 889 matching the scabbard. As with most of the early ones this is inspection stamped profusely, at least 5 times. Brown bakelite grip plates are chip and crack-free and showing minor wear. The scabbard shows original anodizing and lots of wear. The dot 2" down from the frog on the obverse is a dot of paint, not sure why Vets always stored this stuff where painting was being done, but it often seems that way. Hmm.. if it's like around here more likely the wife "putting things away!!" Sorry I digress ☺. So the scabbard ios well worn yet remains dent free. The single side screw is intact and unbuggered. Finally a well worn 4 copper rivet frog is included. All the stitching is intact. Rates Exc++

Here's a good honest K98 combat bayonet. Blade is a quality blued example with a deep black finish. It retains 90% of the factory bluing with wear and evidence of use towards the tip. It is unsharpened, there are however a couple (that means 2) nicks to the cutting edge. The blade is "40" stamped indicating 1940 manufacture. It is serialized 8951 matching the scabbard. As with most of the early ones this is inspection stamped no less than 4 times! Black bakelite grip plates are chip and crack-free. Hilt does show oxidizing and age. The scabbard shows original anodizing and oxidizing to the finish. It is completely dent free. The single side screw is intact and unbuggered. Finally the well worn 1943 marked 4 rivet frog is included. I know some guys like to see the frogs matching the years of bayo manufacture. They don't all match, who knows why, could have been replaced along the way. What I do know is that this one has been there a long time. All the stitching is intact. Rates Exc+

K98-38 K98 by Coppel Gmb.H. 1940
Blade is a very good blued example that is free from abuse sharpening and pitting. The bluing is worn off towards the tip from the runners rubbing. The riccasso is maker marked and dated 1940. The spine is also dated "40". It is serialized 1133 matching the scabbard. As with most of the early ones this is inspection stamped over and over again. Dark brown/black bakelite grip plates are chip and crack-free. Hilt has all the anodizing worn off and does suffer some minor pitting. The scabbard finish is heavily worn down with most gone revealing the steel scabbard. The frog lug is pitted and the lower reverse suffers a dent 1" up from the inspection stamped ball. The single side screw is intact.  Rates Exc+

It retains 98% of the factory bluing with evidence of where the runners have rested for the past 70 years. It is unsharpened but does have some oxidation and pitting towards the tip. The riccasso is stamped "41fnj" indicating 1941 manufacture. The fnj code was designated to Coppel. It is serialized 6860 matching the scabbard. Lots of inspection stamps here as would be expected.  Dark brown/black bakelite grip plates are chip and crack-free. Hilt is anodized but does suffer oxidation and wear. The scabbard shows the original anodized finish with lots of oxidation. The reverse has a good dent. Blade is a blued example with a deep black finish. It retains 95%+ of the factory bluing with wear and evidence of use towards the tip. It is roughly factory ground as is typical for this vintage. It is unsharpened, the tip however, is slightly blunted. The blade is "43 ASW" stamped indicating 1943 manufacture. This matches the scabbard. The crossguard is also stamped 3902 and  43ASW. The pommel and ball are inspection stamped. Chip and crack-free wood grip plates are well fit. The original blued scabbard exhibits a good dent to the reverse but this does not interfere with the blade insert or withdrawal. Lastly there is a frog included. K98-14 Late-war K98 Bayo by Richard Abr. Herder-44clc
Here's a great example of a late-war production K98 combat bayonet. Blade is a blued example that has an excellent finish. Love it! It retains 99% of the factory bluing and is free of sharpening. Other than honest in/out marks all the blue is there. Take a second and look at the coarse blade finish. Compare this to the quality finishes on an early production blade!! At this stage of production the focus was getting product out the door, most of the production stamping and finishing processes were eliminated. Shoot in 1944 the Allies had landed in France and the bombs were raining down over Germany every night!! The blade is "44clc" stamped indicating 1944 manufacture. It is serialized F4372 matching the scabbard. Don't know why but seems the later the production the tougher it becomes to find matching pieces. Brown bakelite grip plates are perfect, just light honest wear. The scabbard shows excellent anodizing and has the smallest of impression to the lower obverse. You will have trouble finding it. Inspection stamped 2 times that I can find, amazing at this late stage this wasn't eliminated! The single side screw is intact and unbuggered. Guys look all day for this quality of late war piece! Rates Exc++/NM

Here's a far above average K98 combat bayonet. Blade is a superior quality blued example with a deep black finish. It retains 99% of the factory bluing. The blade is "44ASW" stamped indicating 1944 manufacture. It is serialized 9501 matching the scabbard. The blade tip has a bowie shape that is finished in the same fashion as the rest of the blade. I've tried hard to get some of my trusted associated to tell me if this was factory done. I've not been able to get consensus so I leave this to you. Make up your own mind. If you know something I don't know on this please contact me. I'm learning too!! All the usual inspection stamps are there. Light brown bakelite grip plates are chip and crack-free. The scabbard shows near perfect anodizing. No dents. The single side screw is intact and unbuggered. Finally a lightly worn marked 4 rivet frog is included- sorry I can not find a date. All the stitching is intact and the retaining strap is intact. Certainly the last of the high quality pieces to leave their factory. Quality and finish were sacrificed from here on in favour of getting numbers out the door. Rates Exc++/NM

Blade is a blued example that is has been ever so lightly sharpened, I say lightl;y cause it;s not sharp. It just has some light wear from in/out. It retains 95% of the factory bluing with no wear. Look at that rough factory finishing of this late war example!! The blade is "cof 44" stamped indicating 1944 manufacture. This is all matching. The crossguard is also stamped 7565. The pommel is inspection stamped. Chip and crack-free bakelite grip-plates are secured with spanner nuts. Shoot even the head of the nut shows lathe marks, never seen on early quality pieces, I really like these small details and evidence of all the corners these guys cut in the last months of the war. Can you imagine the "old timers" in the plant rolling their eyes as quality was superseded by the need to hit the numbers! Look at the draw marks on the pommel, just no time to pretty up anything at this stage. The scabbard shows a clear seam on the side. The anodizing is pretty good with just a shadow of oxidizing.
