Knight's Cross

M-1796 Frosty 935/4 Cased Steinhauer & Lück Knight's Cross
Here's an example that was purchased from the son of the Vet in Ohio. This is a textbook cross that is correctly marked with the "935/4 " mark on the frame. 935 denoting the silver content and 4, S&L's assigned Präsidialkanzlei number. Weight is 29.8gr with the loop. This cross has the lightest evidence of field wear with just a bit of the lacquer lost to the frame corners exposing the silver to the air and subsequent darkening. All of this is clearly shown in my pics. I have attempted to provide the worse views possible so you'll only be pleased in hand. This is three piece constructed with a magnetic core. For those of you checking this against references see Dietrich's reference pg 122. The loop is original and correctly "800" stamped. Included is a 25cm piece of original ribbon. The cross comes with it'soriginal case with black flocking and a correct silk top. The exterior shows scuffs and chaffing. This cross is exactly as returned by the Vet. in 1945. Finally, just so every one can sleep well at night, this comes with a 3 page COA from Dietrich. Exc++

German Cross

M-2174 Cased 2nd Model Unmarked German Cross in Gold by Juncker
Ok guys this one was purchased several years back from Bill Shea, rather than redescribe this thing all over again I'll use Bill's description but add my comments afterwards: Bill's text follows: M-014a Cased German Cross in Gold by Juncker This example, in gold, was awarded for outstanding achievement and heroism in combat. It is produced in what is know as “cupal”, which is a lightweight composite material consisting of aluminum and copper. It displays all the characteristics well known to Juncker manufacture, including the five rivets on the reverse (four recessed, while the centre one is domed). The enamel work is sound, with no visible damage, with a black mobile swastika, outlined in silver, superimposed over a white background. The white background has somewhat toned to a darker hue, and has a few darker spots. The gold wreath is flawless, and the red ring underneath it is near excellent. The starburst is magnificent with all of the burnishing intact; this makes the look very appealing. The unmarked reverse has a verticallymounted pin, which is hinged at the top and appears to be slightly bent. It tapers down from the top to a blunt point. The reverse is well toned, also. There is considerable discoloration to the reverse but no damage. Obviously this does not show when on a tunic or displayed in the case. The black pebbled presentation case is a two-piece hinged construction fastened by a spring tension button. There is minor wear with two tiny chips in the upper lid. The interior features a white satin upper, with a black velvet lower, that displays minor wear. Overall, a near excellent example, of scarce anufacture, of this highly desirable award! As through as Bill is, I'm even more anal about this stuff! Please note that the cardboard frame around the lower left of the bottom case flocking is missing a section. I've clearly shown this. Similar example is shown in Dietrich's reference pg 166. This one is back to me on trade and I'm selling
for hundreds less than Bill did several years ago!

M-2058 German Cross in Gold by C.F. Zimmermann
Here's one that has been there. The black rays have light wear to the ends and the very top silver ray is worn down a few mm, why who knows? but of course I mention it. The enamel is excellent. No chipping, no damage just some light surface scratches, exactly what one expects when looking at a worn award. The silver background to the swas shows age. If you see a "scratch" to the upper left quadrant in the silver it's not, it's a hair I just blew off, sorry. Multi-piece constructed and assembled with hollow rivets. Reverse of the pin is correctly marked "20". This is for the well known maker C.F. Zimmermann of Pforzheim. Both the hinge and the catch are correctly placed in recesses to the reverse plate. Weight is 44.6g. For those of you who are students of these things
a similar example can be viewed in Dietrich's German
Cross reference pg 204. Finally, Dietrich was good
enough to look at this example and confirms, "IMHO this is a
genuine pre-1945 made example". All in all a nice worn example
at a fair price. Exc+

M-2266 German Cross in Silver by Deschler & Sohn
Here's one that has been well worn. The black rays have wear. The enamel is excellent. No chipping, no damage just some light surface scratches, exactly what one expects when looking at a worn award. The silver background to the swas shows age. Multi-piece construction and assembled with 4 rivets in small recesses in the back plate. Reverse of the pin is correctly marked "1". Both the hinge and the catch are correctly surface mounted as was Deschler's habit. Weight is a heavy 70g. For those of you who want this checked against the current references see Dietrich's reference pg 112. All in all a nice example. Exc+

M-2221 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by C.F. Zimmermann L52

The case is in great shape with a stenciled Maltese cross. Overall Exc++

M-1793 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by Rudolf Wachtler & Lange
A superior example that is unmarked however exhibits all the traits that give this one away to be a W&L to include the crosshatch at the outer 3 o'clock arm and the high beading. Further to that, we know that W&L produced 2 variant cores, one being brass, and this one, being magnetic. This core also reflects the typical W&L features to include the O.S. "3" and low "1". Paint is perfect. 3 piece constructed. The early vaulted case is in ok shape with a pushed in button, the button still functions just someone broke the wood around it. It has a stenciled Maltese cross to the lid. It's got light wear to the edges. Overall Exc+

M-1988 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by C.F. Zimmermann

M-1640 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by Steinhauer & Lück
A fine example that is unmarked however due to the construction and details I believe this is an unmarked transitional S&L. I know that some of you can tell this in a second. Paint is 100%, 3 piece magnetic core. This does show some minor field wear but there's still frosting on it. The early quality case is vaulted to the top with a stencilled Maltese cross. It's very nice with just light wear to the edges. Overall Exc++

M-2015 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by Rudolf Wachtler & Lange
A good example that is unmarked however exhibits all the traits that give this one away to be a W&L to include the crosshatch at the outer 3 o'clock arm and the high beading. Further to that, we know that W&L produced 2 variant cores, one being magnetic, and this one, being nonmagnetic brass. This core also reflects the typical W&L features to include the O.S. "3" and low "1". Paint just shows a bit of wear on the swas. were the brass is peeking out. There are traces of the frosting remaining. 3 piece constructed. The case is in great shape. It has a stenciled Maltese cross to the lid. It's got wear to the edges. Overall Exc++

M-1306 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class
Great details with a quality early case. Although unmarked due to the construction and details I believe this is a Klein & Quenzer produced cross. Paint is 99% with just a tiny bit of loss below and to the right of the "9". Leatherette case with magnetic hinge and catch shows honest wear. Multi-piece textbook construction with magnetic core. Overall Exc++
$475

M-1710 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by Wilhelm Deumer
A fine example that is marked "L/11" -Deumer. Sorry my picture of the mark is not that great but trust me it's there. Paint does suffer two chips to the swas which I've clearly shown. Three piece construction with magnetic core. This is nice with some frosting remaining. The case is very nice with magnetic hardware. Interior shows black flocking which we do find infrequently, always fun to find these small variations. The exterior is about as good as it ever gets. Overall Exc++

M-1997 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by Deschler & Sohn
This one is marked "1". Paint shows wear to the swas and to the numbers, 3 piece construction with the hinge edge slightly separated and a magnetic core. The exterior shows light wear . Overall Exc/Exc+

M-1679 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class by Wilhelm Deumer w. marked case

This is nice with some frosting remaining. The case is very nice with magnetic hardware. Peek at the satin to the top you will see the manufacturers name and location stencilled in ink. M-1986 Cased Iron Cross 1st Class L/55 Wachtler & Lange
Nicely marked example manufactured by L/55. It's got honest field wear. Front has real nice paint. The core is textbook W&L with the low set 1 and last 9. Frame is very clean, (and I don't mean cleaned, I never touch this stuff!!) and the outside edge has nice sparkle. Reverse has good silver finish with just enough wear so you know someone wore it. The catch is the typical thick square wire we have come to expect from these guys. Multi-piece textbook construction with magnetic core. The cross comes with a nice LDO marked case with magnetic hardware. The pin is correctly stamped "L/55" in a box, I know it may look to be L65 but with a loop it's L55. This example matched the magnetic version shown in George & Dietrich's bible pg 312, 'cept this one is in better condition!! (Sorry Dietrich ☺), Overall NM

M-1587 Schinkel Iron Cross 1st Class Screw Back
Wow, incredibly rare! Never seen one for sale before. Just purchased out of an advanced EK collection. This one has age and some paint loss to the magnetic iron core. Nicely detailed early frame and finishing to the edges. Look at the screw-back device. See how it's dished matching the vaulted cross? Neat to see these small details. There is some silver was remaining to the reverse. Expensive yes but find another! Overall Exc+

M-1989 Rare One piece Schinkel Iron Cross 1st Class
Another rare Schinkel variant. This is constructed in one piece. The core frame and back plate are all tombac based. Look how the core is all pimpled, that's not the paint rather the surface finish of the tombac. Neat. These early 1st class crosses are far rarer than the 2nd class Schinkel's. Look how vaulted it is. Similar example can be seen in Previtera's reference. For those of you who don't own this book, you need it, check my book section for one!! There is some "flash" that has been left to the inside corners and protrudes into the core area. The inside corners are misaligned and not filed down smooth. Neat.
