S-98 Bayonets

BA-5647 S-98 nA. by WKC
Here's a fine example of a S-98 bayonet by WKC. This was the first bayonet authorized for the Mauser in 1898. Super long blade measures 520mm!! This is not serialized, (Imperial examples never are! ) the riccasso is nicely stamped with the Imperial  side-by-side king and knight's heads over the Letters W.K. & C. Two piece hardwood grip plates show honest wear stains and bruises. They are secure unslotted bolts that were serrated to the sides of the head ensuring they would not turn during assembly. The nuts are slotted and these required a special tool for removal. Hilt shows matching wear and use. The spine does not have a flashguard. The scabbard is the std leather body with plated steel fittings. The lug has a pair two scribed lines. The blade inserts nicely being secured with two runners secured with a front mounted screw. K98 Bayonets

Sorted from earliest to latest

Imperial Era

K98-5649 Imperial S84/98 nA S Sawback
Incredibly hard to locate these very early bayonets are very distinctive. 99% had the sawback removed prior to the end of WWI as per regulations in Jan 1918 but some had not been removed by the armories prior to wars end. This is one such example. Blade retains 19 double rows of factory sharpened teeth making this an ugly looking weapon in look and function. The cutting edge of the riccasso is rounded as one would expect of an Imperial piece as opposed to the flat one sees on later Weimar and Nazi era examples. This is not serialized, (Imperial examples never are! ). The blade shows wear and honest use. Hardwood grip plates show wear stains and bruises. They are secure unslotted bolts that were serrated to the sides of the head ensuring they would not turn during assembly. The nuts are slotted and these required a special tool for removal. Hilt shows matching wear and use. The pommel being inspection stamped with a crown over a "W". Take note of these Imperial era press buttons, they are unslotted.  The scabbard is also distinctive being a steel reissue with a straight, not flanged throat with a brazed lug mounted on a large oval plate. The lug has two pairs of scribed lines. The has a flat on one side aiding the insertion of the sawback and a radi on the cutting side for the rounded riccasso. They are secured with a FRONT mounted screw. The ball is inspection stamped with a crown over a "W".  The scabbard has remnants of black paint. It is undented with some minor oxidation. Rates Exc+

K98-5653 K-98 SG/184G by Jos Corts 1935
Here's a beautiful example out of a great collection that we recently acquired. The blade on this one rates Exc++. It has beautiful blueing, a perfect tip and fit, and it hasn't been messed with as so many of these are. There are runner marks along with the common spots where the runners have rested. The blade is stamped "S/184G" to the reverse indicating Jos Corts manufacturer. It is also stamped "7931 a" to the obverse matching the scabbard. The scabbard is in great shape! There are a few bumps and light surface scratches but the anodized finish looks great and the fit is perfect! The crossguard is stamped "6672"and secured with two rivets .The hilt is in beautiful shape with practically no wear and amazing finish. The brown hardwood grip plates are in great shape! A few bumps and scratches but no chips or splits. They also have a perfect fit, being tightly secured by two rivets/spanner nuts. This piece is profusely inspection stamped as one would expect. This one also comes with an excellent early copper riveted frog. It is tightly secured with all of the stitching intact and rivets intact as well! Overall this is a great early piece that is in need of a good home! Exc++

K98-52 S/244.G by Mundlos-1935
Tough to find early vintage K98 bayo's. Blade shows age and evidence of cleaning. It is NOT sharpened. The blade is serialized 389 almost matching the scabbard which is marked 339. Hardwood grip plates show wear stains and bruises. Hilt shows matching wear and use. The scabbard fits perfect and shows wear but no dents of abuse. The single side screw is lost. The blade and the scabbard are off one digit, a factory error, who knows but certainly these have been together a long long time. Rates Exc+

K98-5651 K-98 S/240 by F. Herder 1936
Very tough to find early matching K98 Bayo's. The blade on this one rates Exc+. The majority of the bluing remains intact and the tip and fit are perfect. The blade is also stamped "1461 a" matching the scabbard. The reverse of the scabbard is also stamped "1936". The scabbard is in nice shape! The hilt is in beautiful shape with practically no wear and amazing finish. The brown multi-toned hardwood grip plates are in great shape! A few bumps and scratches but no chips or splits. They also have a perfect fit, being tightly secured by two rivets/screws. This piece is profusely inspection stamped as one would expect. This one also comes with a nice frog that is maker marked. It is tightly secured with all of the stitching intact and the rivets are intact as well! The back strap appears to have been period removed. The reverse is also stamped although it is hard to make out I think it says "DAHL . 1936". Overall this is a great early piece that is in need of a good home! Exc+/Exc++

K98-5652 K-98 by Gebr. Heller 1937
Beauty early piece. The blade on this one rates Exc+/Exc++. The majority of the bluing remains intact and the tip and fit are perfect, now I know I said bluing but the finish is truly a plum color, (you guys that collect this stuff know exactly what I'm talking about) very attractive and when I hold it in the sun it really looks great! Towards the tip most of the finish has been worn. The blade is stamped "S/178" indicating the manufacturer. The blade is also stamped "1239 b" matching the scabbard. The reverse of the scabbard is also stamped "1937" matching the "37" stamp to the spine. The scabbard is in nice shape! It shows wear, the single side screw is also lost to time and there are some marks and small hits. It remains dent free and has a perfect fit! The hilt is in good shape with some areas of rough spots. The brown multi-toned hardwood grip plates are in beautiful shape! There is one pressure mark but that's it. No scratches, chips or splits. They also have a perfect fit, being tightly secured by two rivets/screws. This piece is profusely inspection stamped as one would expect. This one also comes with a beautiful frog. It is tightly secured with all of the stitching intact and rivets intact as well! Overall this is a great early piece that is in need of a good home! Exc+

1944

K98-29 K98 by E&F Hörster with Riveted Grips-44asw
Blade is a blued example that suffers sharpening and age. It has no bluing left and evidence of use. The blade is "44ASW" stamped indicating1944 manufacture. This matches the scabbard. The crossguard is also stamped 6632 and44ASW. The pommel and ball are inspection stamped. Chip and crack-free brown/orange bakelite grip-plates are correctly riveted as was the fashion adopted by Hörster to expedite production with the Allies at the doorstep. Everything has the look of expediting production, no time to pretty up anything at this stage. The scabbard shows a clear seam on the side again, the focus was production, this stuff that was absolutely unacceptable in earlier years now was fine, as Speer pulled out all the stops to equip his Volksturm! The phosphate finished scabbard is well worn with no oxidizing but lots of wear and bruises. Rates Exc
