What a great Imperial 2pc Medal Bar which consists of a 3rd Class Bavarian Military Medal Cross with Swords and a 2nd Class Iron Cross. The Imperial 2nd Class Iron Cross by "LW" is a die struck, three piece (single piece iron core and two piece silver alloy frame) construction. The obverse features a black pattee style cross with a centrally placed embossed "W" (cypher for King Wilhelm II), below a Kings crown and above "1914", all within a ribbed and flat border. The reverse shows a centrally placed oak leaf cluster, below a "FW" (cypher for King Friedrich Wilhelm III) and a Kings crown and is above "1813". The black paint is in impeccable condition! The border has beautifully aged leaving a nice dark patina. The ring is marked "LW". The 3rd Class Bavarian Military Medal Cross with Swords is tombak based, die struck and bronze washed. The obverse depicts a centrally placed stylized "L" below a crown all on a smooth backing. This is then surrounded by a white belt that reads "Merenti". This is on a pebbled cross and below tow crossed broad swords. The reverse has a centrally placed lion and reads "1866". Beautiful bronze wash remains! The two awards are attached to a steel based medal bar that shows folded over ribbons. To the back is a moth eaten blue felt covering with a well working steel pin assembly. The Bavarian piece was missing and was recently added. A nice display piece!
