Late-war Japanese Type 98 Army Officer Sword

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Here's an interesting example pulled out of a Veteran's family basement last week. This one has a Showa period blade (Showa stamp is visible), indicating a non traditionally made sword blade, and is of the type usually found in WW2 Army Shin-gunto Type 98 mounts. It's currently with a nice prominent temper line.. Mei reads ... seki ju fukuta kanetake ... which I believe translates to Made in Seki by Fukuta Kanetake. No sharpening but it does have some oxidization which I have not touched, no not even semi-chrome. I have shown the very worse views possible. It's a pierced tsuba, but with six seppa (washers) with the tang secured with a bamboo peg. The kabutogane and other metal fittings appear to be very much like the end of war examples I've seen. Authentic, but made with economy of raw materials in mind. The hilt is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin with a brass dragon on either side all wrapped in a brown cloth tape with a twist. The field scabbard is wood based with a simple steel ashi is in place for carrying. It has the lower part of a nonremovable leather combat cover, (factory shrunk in place). It is of double thickness towards the chape and in fine shape. As is most often the case with field scabbards no spring clip retention system is employed.
