Always a pleasure to handle, these degans are rare and near impossible to find any more. These were authorized for wear personally by Himmler and ownership required a certificate for wear. Each one was, upon being awarded, duly noted in the SS Diensltersliste and became a part of the owners service record. This example is a early Dachau produced piece. The maker marked blade rates Exc++/NM being bright and clean. The 32.5" blade is correctly maker marked with the stylized "PDM" over the "Rostfrei" etched in place. PDM represents the master smith Paul Müller and rostfrei being German for "rust free" or what we call in English "stainless steel". This mark dates the sword some time after 1940. BTW, these were made without any maker mark as well. There are a few minor scuffs but nothing major, really nice and of course it's rust free! :> The buffer pad is brown leather, these Dachau examples usually have a black buffer, no big deal seen ?em in brown as well. The scabbard is dent free and original paint is a black enamel. There are a few odd scuffs and marks. Say the paint is 99.% intact. The scabbard shell and fitting are just slightly smaller and more elegant than on standard police/SS degans. You would never notice except if you lay one of these next to another. The lower fitting is the "slip fit" type. The top being secured with 2 headless side screws and having non factory blackened backgrounds. Neither the top scabbard fitting or the D guard are SS proofed which is exactly how you want to see these- textbook. If you ever do see one proofed run the other way! The grip is composed of 13 ribbed sections being separated with original wire wrap. There are a couple small cracks toward the very top towards the top of the grip where it meets the steel. The runes button is correct set in place being factory darkened to the background. Note the placement just after the fourth rib, exactly were it should be! The ferrels are both separate pieces with no blackening to backgrounds, again exactly as one wants to see these. All the fittings are chrome plated and exactly what one would expect to find on a textbook Dachau sword. Very nice! This is a completely textbook SS Officer Degan you will be proud to own! Note I was approached about this degan In July 2016 by the authors on an upcoming reference by Ralf Siegert that includes SS Degens, so I expect this will be featured, a nice bonus that only increases the desirability of this example.
