This is an outstanding 1883 patterned WWI Imperial Japanese Naval Officer Dirk. The plated blade on this one is a real beauty! The fit is tight and the tip is perfectly pointed! The blade rates NM. The blade measures 8 3/4 inches long. The saya (scabbard) is wood based with polished sharkskin and looks great! The saya has two brass based scalloped fittings. They show wonderful detail with several leaves and cherry blossoms throughout all gilded. Both screws remain intact and the top clip works well! The brass based gilded crossguard looks good and is well marked with the anchor in the cherry" mark of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The ferrule and pommel cap are also brass based. They are nicely detailed with random pebbling a cherry blossom and leaves. The grip is tightly triple brass wire wrapped, over a white pebbled ray skin. It has two cherry blossoms over the mekugi (peg). The overall length is 16". This one comes with it's issue bag and presentation letter. This dirk was presented to Kondo by the NCO's of Iwakuni Navy Aviation Corps, (see translation). An extra ordinary example of a Japanese Naval dirk!
