Here we have an Austrian Military Merit Cross with War Decoration by V. Mayer. A neat one here! It is constructed out of a multi-piece, die struck nickel-silver base that has been silvered and contains red and white enamel work. The obverse displays a red and white pattee style cross that reads "Verdienst" (Merit) to the center and shows a laurel leaf and berry wreath to the corners. The reverse is white and has that same wreath to the corners. The top has an integral loop that "VM" (the V looks to be damaged off) marked and ring which holds a triangular folded (Austrian style) red and white rayon ribbon. The ribbon has the War Decoration (two gilt crossed broad swords) on it. About 90% of the enamel remains intact (the damage is mostly to the reverse). The cross measures approximately 1 3/16 inches wide and tall. Nice detail!
