Here we have a Minesweeper War Badge by 3.49 Unkown Maker (6) – Karneth Design – Varition 1. It is constructed out of a die struck tombak base that has been gold gilded and silver washed. The oval shaped obverse depicts an explosion coming out of the water, this is below a Kriegsmarine eagle (with out-stretched wings, clutching a swastika within its talons), which is surrounded by an oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together on the bottom. The reverse of the badge shows the tombak; soldered block hinge, 25% of the square catch and a wide coke bottle shaped pin. The unique eagle head and details throughout are excellent! Beautiful detail, gilding and silvering! It may have been polished at some point. It measures approximately 2 3/16 inches high by 1 ¾ inches wide. See Vol. 1 page 394 of Weber & Skora’s “The Kriegsmarine Awards” book. A fine piece.
