US Civil War Model 1840 Cavalry Saber Sword

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Here's a hefty beast! The Saber was in use through the American Civil War, The Indians Wars, and made an appearance in the Spanish-American War! The long, 35 ¾ inch, single/double fuller blade looks good. The obverse is marked "Curdts" the reverse is marked "Solingen". It has a tight fit and perfect tip. The blade rates Exc+/Exc++. It shows heavy age grey and surface scratches throughout. The leather buffer pad remains intact. The steel based scabbard looks great! It shows age toning and patina throughout. The reverse scabbard tip is marked: "G.T. S & K". It continues to remain dent free and retains its original scabbard screw. The brass based, three branched hand guard looks great! It is nicely patinaed and only shows typical age wear. The top of the pommel shows the end of the tang. The grip is wood based, wrapped in sting, then covered in a blackened leather and has double twisted wire wrap (which alternates the leather wrapped string). 90% of the leather remains intact. The grip wire remains completely intact. Most of these were made by American contractors but due to the large number of swords required at least 1000 were made in Germany by S & K (see scabbard tip photo) and imported. The long sword measures 43 ½ inch total length. A rare prize!
