Cased Luftwaffe Pilot Badge by Assmann

An excellent looking Flugzeugführerabzeichen by F.W. Assmann & S?hn. The Luftwaffe pilot badge was awarded upon completing flight training and received their license. It is constructed out of two pieces of die struck nickel-silver / tombak based that has been black burnished and silver plated. The obverse features a blackened centrally placed massive swooping Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is the attached, at the wings, to a half laurel leaf and berry, half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse a soldered on barrel hinge, soldered on round wire catch, round wire pin and two tombak spun rivets. The obverse displays beautiful details throughout the eagle and wreath. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/8 inches tall. See page 110 of Previtera's "Combat Badges of the Third Reich Vol 2 Luftwaffe". The award comes housed in its appropriate case. The case is constructed out of wood and pressed cardboard with a simulated, grained, blue, leather covering. To the top is a beautiful pressed gold gilded "Luftwaffen- Flugzeugführer Abzeichen", in gothic style script. The interior top lid is lined in a blue felt and has an underlying pad. The bottom interior of the case is covered in a blue/purple felt with and outlines the pin, hinge and actch assembly. To the front is a gilded round steel spring loaded closure button. To the back is a gilded steel staggered bar hinge. The hinge and the closure button continue to function well. The case is in wonderful condition with only minor wear to the bottom. It measures approximately 3 1/4 inches long by 3 inches wide by 1 inch thick. A truly beautiful assembly you would be proud to have in your collection!
