A very decent piece by SMF! The more desirable plated blade on this one looks good! It has a beautifully executed “SMF Solingen” maker mark, with a perfectly stamped proof mark just above it! It has a perfect tip and perfect fit. The plating looks good with some honest age. The blade on this one rates an Exc+/Exc++. There is age grey and spotting throughout along with visible runner marks. The original blue pebbled buffer pad remains intact. The steel based scabbard has lost most of its finish and has a neat dark look to it with surface oxidation. It depicts awesome details throughout, with the random pebbling, oak leaves and acorns. Now look at the lower band, see hold it’s been carefully period repaired? Really cool, I believe that Witty shows an similar example in his book. It remains completely dent free and the two throat retaining screws remain intact! The Luftwaffe eagle crossguard has amazing detail to its head, feathers, wings and top side oak leaves and acorns. The aluminum pommel is beautifully hand enhanced to the sides and has those two proud gold gilded swastika you want to see, surrounded by oak leaves and acorns. 90%+ of the gold gilding remains intact! Just beautiful! The early trylon grip has aged to a nice orange over time. It has several cracks and a chip to the very bottom that is completely hidden by the portepee. The correct aluminum springy wire wrap remains tightly intact. A nice piece with some nice features!
