Here's a good example of an worn officers sword. This one has a Exc+/Exc++ blade with a marked tang and a straight temper line. The blade has some wee pits but no nail catchers. Blade is seated through a multi-piece closed tsuba with the tang secured with a bamboo peg. The military type hilt is typical officer quality. It is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin with the traditional 3 brass cherry blossoms all wrapped in original brown cloth tape with a twist. The kabuto-gane, (pommel) is copper/brass. The scabbard is steel based with nice original paint with an ornate copper/brass ashi is in place for carrying. The paint has honest wear. The entire scabbard body one has one small hit. As is most often the case with these scabbards a spring clip retention system is employed. This works fine but there is some play. A good condition signed 1943 Japanese type 98 with only a small patch of pits and slight play in the handle being the detractors
