1st Class Air Defence Medal

A Luftschutz Ehrenzeichen 1 Stufe. The first class Luftschutz medal was awarded to those who gave exceptional service to the civil air defense of German from January 1933. It is constructed out of a die struck tombak base that has been gold fire gilded with polished highlights. The obverse features a pebbled Canterbury style cross that has a centrally placed mobile swastika that is surrounded by “Für Verdienste im Luftschutz” (For Meritorious Service in Air Defense). The reverse features that same pebbled cross with “1938” (19 - left arm, 38 - right arm). To the top of the cross is an integral rectangular hole, loop (may be a replacement) and round ring. Attached to the ring is the approximately 4 ½ inches of original blue, white, red and black rayon ribbon. The award measures approximately 1 ½ inches wide and tall. Stunning gold plating on this one!
