A Zivil-Flugzeugführer Schirmmütze by Erel. The obverse shows traces of where other insignia may have been and the civil pilot insignia is not sewn in the ‘traditional’ Erel way. It could be argued that this was a Navy Visor and the insignia was replaced at a later time to increase its value. The insignia alone is extremely rare and everything on this piece is original. With all this in mind this piece is priced accordingly. The visor is constructed out of a dark blue wool with a interwoven black mohair center-band and dark blue piping. Attached to the obverse is a Civil Pilot winged mobile swastika, which consists of; rolled, twisted, and flat hand embroidered gold bullion, silver aluminum-flatwire and rayon stitching, which has all been stitched to a blue wool backing and to the cap. The front also features a black lacquered visor peak with a stitched on re-enforcement edge. To the sides are two peened on multi piece black enamel side buttons that hold the black leather chin strap in place. The interior features a tan brown sweatband with vent holes to the forehead, a faded “EREL Patent Stirnschutz” stamp to the side and a cross stitch to the back. The base of the interior has a stitched on light blue silk lining (shows stain marks) underneath a stitched on diamond moisture shield with the Erel diamond and manufactures mark that is very faded. Overall it is in great condition! This is a very rare visor/insignia missing from most collections!
