A Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkehr des Memellandes (Slanted G Type I) on a Court Mount by Hauptmünzamt of Berlin. The Memal Medal was awarded to those who had achieved special merit in the reunification of the Memelland with the German Reich. It is constructed out die stamped tombak base that has been bronze washed. The round shaped obverse depicts two unclothed men (one has a chain around his right wrist, the other is holding an NSDAP flag on a pole) that are standing on a pedestal that has a German national eagle on it. The reverse reads: “Zur Erinnerung an die Heimkerhr des Memellandes 22. März 1939” (To commemorate the return of the Memel District. 22 March 1939) surrounded by an oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom, just above “H.C.”. To the top is a soldered on loop and ring that is attached to a Parade/Court Mount ribbon bar. The mount is constructed out of a zinc-alloy that is covered, to the obverse in the appropriate folded red, white and green rayon ribbon. To the reverse is a blue wool and a tombak pin, hinge and catch assembly that remain in well working condition. It retains nice detail throughout. The medal measures approximately 1 ¼ inches in diameter. A very rare piece!
