A Cased Flugzeugführer und Beobachterabzeichen by Friedrich Linden of Lüdenscheid. The Pilot / Observer badge was to be awarded to personnel who qualified as both a pilot and observer. It is a two piece die struck tombak/nickel silver construction that has been silver washed and gold gilded. The obverse features a silvered centrally placed massive swooping Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is the attached, at the wings, to a gold half laurel leaf and berry / half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse correctly displays the soldered on tombak block hinge, soldered on tombak round wire catch, nickel-silver round wire pin and two rivets. The obverse displays beautiful details throughout the eagle and wreath. The frosting and gilding are great! It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/16 inches tall. The badge comes housed in its case which is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained blue leather (Lederimitat). To the front is a gilded steel spring loaded push button. To the back is a gilded steel, staggered, piano hinge. To the very top in the silvered Gothic style gold script it reads: “Luftwaffe Flugzeugführer- u Beobachter - Abzeichen”. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a dark blue fibrous felt material that outlines a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is covered in a light blue spray on fibrous felt. The case measures approximately 3 1/8 inches wide and deep and 1 inch thick. A beautiful assembly!
