A Kreigsmarine Narvikschild. The Narvik Campaign Arm Shield was awarded to all German forces that took part in the battles of Narvik between 9 April and 8 June 1940. It is constructed out of die stamped tombak base that has been gold gilded and attached, with tombak prongs, to a zinc-alloy plate that is hidden by a navy blue wool to the front and back . The obverse depicts a closed winged national eagle clutching a wreathed static swastika in its talons above a bannered “Narvik” an edelweiss flower, that is flanked by “1940” (19 - left, 40 - right) and above a crossed plane propeller and fouled anchor. This is all in a shield type outline that is surrounded by a quality oval navy blue wool backing. The edelweiss for the Gebirgsjäger, the anchor for the Kriesmarine and a propeller for the Luftwaffe. To the reverse is the oval navy blue wool backing. The shield continues to retain 75% of it gold gilt and the detail is beautiful! It shows oxidization. It measures approximately 2 1/8 inches wide by 4 1/16 inches high. A great addition for your collection!
