A Cased Early 1937 Deutsche Verdienstmedaille in Silber. The Order of Merit of the German Eagle, was instituted May 1st 1937 (Reorganized in 1939 and 1944), and was awarded predominantly to foreign nationals who had made a meritorious contribution to the German Reich on the recommendation of the Reich Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Silver Medal of Merit was awarded to Unteroffiziere (Non-Commissioned Officers). It is constructed out of a multi-piece die stamped silver base that has been finished in a lacquer coating. The round shaped obverse features a textured Maltese style cross that has four national eagles (Hoheitszeichen) between each of the crosses arms, on a smooth backing with a thin border rim to the exterior. The reverse reads, in Gothic style script: “Deutsche Verdienst-Medaille”, on that same smooth backing and border. To the bottom edge it shows a crescent moon and reads: “835 Pr. Münze Berlin” (State Mint). To the top is a soldered on loop and ring which holds approximately 3 inches of folded red, white and black rayon ribbon that has a stitched on well working brass gilded pin assembly, that remain in well working condition. The award measures 1 ½ inches in diameter. It is in minty condition. The award comes house in its early appropriate case. The case is constructed out of wood and pressed cardboard with a simulated, grained, red leather covering. To the top is a pressed gold gilded national eagle. The interior top lid is lined in a pearl silk and has an underlying pad. It reads, in gold script: “Deutsche Verdienstmedaille”. The bottom interior of the case is covered in a black velvet and outlines the award, ring and pin. To the front is a red painted “mushroom head” style spring loaded closure button. To the back is a gilded steel staggered piano hinge. The hinge and the closure button continue to function well. The case measures approximately 4 1/2 inches long by 3 1/16 inches wide by 7/8 of an inch thick. There is wear and scuffs to the exterior. A great assembly!
