Japanese Type 98 Army Officer Shin-Gunto with a story

Here's a good example of an worn officers sword. This one has an Exc blade with a well marked tang and a straight temper line. The tang has kanji on one side. The blade has some age and scuffs and age darkening. It's semi-machine made with hand finishing. Blade is seated through a multi-piece pierced open brass tsuba with the tang secured with a peg. The military type hilt is typical officer quality. It is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin with the traditional 3 brass cherry blossoms all wrapped in brown cloth tape with a twist. the tape looks new to me so I'm going to say this has been professionally rewrapped. The kabuto-gane, (pommel) is copper/brass with a family crest added to the inside edge. The scabbard is steel based with original paint, from what little I can see. The whole scabbard is covered in a leather combat cover, (factory shrunk in place). It is of double thickness towards the chape and at the top. It's been there forever and you can clearly see the shape of the fittings underneath it. Rubbing my hand down the leather I can not detect any dents. As you can see the cover is split open and only held in place with tape, remove it if you wish but this is how I got it so how it stays. As is most often the case with these scabbards a spring clip retention system is employed. This works great. Included is an original tassel with some frays.

  • Note as of 9/2 from seller: The sword has a scabbard field cover on it, the upper snap part being held on with tape cause its starting to show it’s age. If you look closely at the cover and the underlying metal scabbard, there is a bullet hole in the scabbard, but not in the sword. This sword was likely in a Banzai charge and was out of the scabbard at the time. There is no marking on the blade from the bullet hole. Someone likely found the sword and scabbard in the midst of the carnage and united the blade with the scabbard. It was brought back by a PBY Catalina pilot based on Iwo Jima. Likely traded for cigarettes and peaches. Who knows. The handle WAS re-wrapped ……I suspect it might have been chewed up a bit as well. By the curvature of the handle, this is and old blade re-mounted to go to war. A brave man likely carried it.
