Awarded during Spain’s Franco Period - Con Distintivo Rojo - Orden al Mérito Militar. The Red Decoration - Order of Military Merit Cross, instituted August 3rd 1864 by Queen Isabel II, was awarded for courage, actions, deeds or service during an armed conflict or military operations that involve or may involve the use of armed force and may require significant military or command skills. It is constructed out of a multi piece die stamped brass base that has been gold gilded and contains red translucent, white and blue enamel work. The obverse features a centrally placed and separately applied Spanish Coat of arms, which consists of a gold rose on a blue round backing with alternating rampant lions (on a white background) and castles (on a red translucent background) to each quadrant. The Coat of Arms is above a Greek style cross that has a bar and Spanish crown to the top. The reverse has a stylized, in gold: “MM” (Mérito Militar) on a white background, in place of the Coat of arms. To the top is an integral loop and ring which holds approximately 3 inches of red and white ribbon that has been stitched together. To the top is the traditional Spanish style bar hanger with a pin, hinge and catch assembly to the back. The cross measures approximately 1 3/8 inches wide and tall. Beautiful enamel work!
