Most of these are made of zinc and have lost all of their finish. An Erinnerungsmedaille für die spanischen Freiwilligen im Kampf gegen den Bolschewismus. The German Spanish “Blue Division” Commemorative Medal, instituted January 3rd, 1944 by the Third Reich, was awarded to Spanish volunteers of the “Blue Division” who served in the Russian front. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc tombak base that has been gilded. The round shaped obverse depicts, front top to bottom; a Heer M35 helmet on a stand above two shields, the left depicts a German National Eagle the right depicts the Spanish Falange (yoke and arrows) in front of a horizontally lying broad sword, above a static swastika that is flanked by laurel leaf clusters. The reverse reads “Division Española De Voluntarios En Rusia” (Division Spanish volunteer Russia) above a 2nd Class Iron Cross and ribbon that is flanked by a laurel leaf cluster (left) and an oak leaf cluster (right). To the top is an integral loop and bent tombak ring which holds approximately 2 1/4 inches of red, white, black and yellow rayon ribbon. It measures approximately 1 ¼ inches in diameter. A rare piece to come by!
