A Luftwaffe Beobachterabzeichen by Paul Meybauer of Berlin. The badge was awarded after completion of two month qualifying service, after five operational flight as observer, or if the recipient was wounded while posted as observer (prior to the completion of the other criteria). It is constructed out of a two piece, die struck, nickel-silver/zinc base that has been silver washed/chemically blackened and covered in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a detailed Luftwaffe open winged eagle that is clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is in front of a half laurel leaf half oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse of the badge is maker marked: “P. Meybauer Berlin” and displays; the soldered on round wire catch, soldered on barrel hinge, a round wire pin and two rivets. Beautiful details throughout the eagle's wings head and wreath! It measures approximately 2 1/16 inches wide and tall. A nice one!
