A Luftwaffe Beobachterabzeichen im Etui by Wilhelm Deumer of Lüdenscheid. The Luftwaffe Observer Badge was awarded after the completion of; two months qualifying service, after five operational flights as an observer, or if the recipient was wounded while posted as observer (prior to the completion of the other criteria). It is constructed out of a two piece, die struck nickel-silver base that has been silver washed / chemically blackened and covered in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a detailed Luftwaffe open winged eagle that is clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is in front of a half laurel leaf, half oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse of the badge is correctly maker marked: “W. Deumer Lüdenscheid” and displays the correct; two nickel-silver rivets, a soldered on c-shaped catch, a soldered on barrel hinge and a round wire pin. Sll of the components remain working well. The badge depicts beautiful details throughout the eagle’s wings, head and frosty wreath! It measures approximately 2 1/16 inches wide and tall. The badge comes housed in its appropriate early W. Deumer style issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained blue leather. To the front is a round tombak spring loaded push button. To the back is a tombak, staggered, piano hinge. To the very top is the gold foil Gothic style script that reads: “Beobachter”. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a dark blue fibrous felt material that outlines the pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is constructed out of a blue velvet material and has an underlying pad. The exterior of the case shoes scuffs throughout. The case measures approximately 3 1/16 inches wide and deep and 15/16 of an inch thick. A great matching assembly!
