A Heavy (70g) - Deutsches Kreuz in Gold (DKiG) im Etui by 21 - Gebr. Godet & Co. of Berlin. The Gold German Cross was awarded to military personnel to recognize repeated acts (6-8) of bravery or exceptional command in combat. It is constructed out of a die struck, five piece construction, with a; tombak base, white silvered core, gold gilded tombak wreath and red and black enamel work. The obverse features a large centrally placed raised black enamel mobile swastika, on a smooth white/silver base, which is surrounded by a gold gilded tombak laurel leaf and ribbon wreath that is marked “1941” to the bottom and is bordered in a red enamel base. This is all on a two piece backend and silvered eight point sunburst pattern backing. The full back reverse correctly shows; six rivets, a soldered on c shaped wire catch, soldered on barrel hinge and a solid tapered flatwire pin which is maker marked “21” to the underside. Four of the edges have been bent and show evidence to the reverse side. The enamel has chips and cracks throughout and remains 98% intact. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide and tall. It weighs 70g. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained black leather (Lederimitat). To the front is a round plated steel spring loaded push button. To the back is a plated steel, staggered, piano hinge. There is an exterior thin gold border. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a spray on black fibrous felt material that outlines a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is covered in a pearl velvet above a pad. There is in excellent condition with only minor ageing. The case measures approximately 4 3/16 inches wide and deep and 1 1/16 inches thick. Godet is one of the very first manufacturers on German Crosses. A rare and desirable maker.
