When was the last time you ever saw a boxed Imperial EKI? The Iron Cross is a multi-piece, die struck construction that has been soldered together. The single piece core is constructed out of an Iron sheet metal base that has been black enamel painted. The frame and back plate are constructed out of a silver alloy base. The obverse features; a pattee style cross that has a centrally placed embossed "W" (cypher for King Wilhelm II), below a Kings crown and above "1914" to the lower arm, which is all on a black base and surrounded by a silvered ribbed/beaded row and a flat outlying border. The reverse features a soldered oval plate barrel hinge, soldered round wire catch and coke bottle pin. The back is marked "WS" (Wagner & Sohn, Berlin) just beside the catch. The border and back has nice patina in blue/black that only comes from silver. Only minor oxidization spots. The case is quite nice being early with the curved corners and large button. It is made out of wood and pressed cardboard, with a simulated, maroon leather covering. The top features a silver Iron Cross outline. To the front is a large spring loaded closure button. To the back is a paper type hinge. The hinge and the closure button function well. The interior top lid is lined in pearl satin and has an underlying pad. The bottom interior of the case is made of a purple felt material and outlines the pin, hinge and catch. The case is in wonderful condition and it's no wonder as it's been protected for years with the cardboard carton!! A high quality private purchase example with Just the normal wear throughout. An excellent piece!
