A 2. Klasse Silber Spanien-Kreuz mit Schwertern im LDO Etui by L/13 (Paul Meybauer of Berlin). The Silver Spanish Cross with Swords was awarded to those who had at least moderate combat experience, having participated in decisive battles. It is a multi-piece construction made out of a die struck tombak base that has been silver washed with frosted highlights and finished in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a convex pebbled Maltese style cross with two crossed broad swords and four Luftwaffe eagles to each corner, that has an encircled (separately soldered on) mobile swastika to the center. The full back concave reverse is marked “L/13” and has a soldered on round wire catch, soldered on block hinge and coke bottle pin, all of which are in well working condition. The detail and patina is beautiful! Typical age wear throughout. It measures approximately 2 3/16 inches wide and tall. The award comes housed in its appropriate LDO issue case. It is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained green leather. To the top is the early style, pressed silver foil “LDO” emblem. The front features a steel round spring loaded closure button. To the back is a steel, staggered, piano hinge. Both remain working well. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a spray on maroon fibrous felt material that outlines the pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is constructed out of a maroon velvet and has an underlying pad. The very bottom features a stamp that reads: “11.90”. The whole case shows age and scuff marks throughout. The interior velvet hinge has a small tear. The case measures approximately 2 15/16 inches wide by 3 3/16 inches deep and 1 inch thick. A great assembly, a great display piece!
