A wonderful Campaign grouping! Instituted July 1st 1941, The Cholm Shield was awarded to all members of the Wehrmacht who honorably took part in the defense of Cholm inside the encirclement. The propaganda book title “Kampfgruppe Scherer - 105 Tage eingschlossen” 1943, was awarded towards Luftwaffe Feldwebel Willi Schaedler. It was written by Kriegsberichter Richard Muck, it was printed by the firm of Gerhard Stalling Verlag, Oldenburg. The shield is constructed out of a die stamped steel base that has been silver washed and attached with three prongs to a steel plate hidden by green wool and a lacquered tan paper backing. The shield shaped obverse depicts a large closed winged national eagle clutching an Iron Cross in its talons above “Cholm 1942” above an oval green wool backing. The reverse features a lacquered paper backing. It measures approximately 65mm tall by 40mm wide. Included in this grouping is a printed cardstock “Cholm-Schild” postcard (15cm x 10.5cm”, Photo (6cm x 6.5 cm) and book (26.5cm x 20.5 cm). An extremely rare find.
