Cased Imperial Prussian Observer Badge

Abzeichen für Beobachtungsoffiziere aus Flugzeugen 1914 im Etui by C. E. Juncker of Berlin. The Prussian Observer Badge was awarded upon successfully completing; at least 1000 km on the aircraft, a technical assistance examination on the aircraft, at least one retake, an exploratory survey, and a certification certificate as an observation officer. It is constructed out of a two piece nickel-silver base with red, white and black enamel work. The obverse features a centrally placed Oberbefehlshaber Heeresgruppe Flag above a ray pattern surrounded by a half laurel leaf and berry, half oak leaf and acorn wreath tied together at the bottom by a bow tie and underneath a Prussian style crown. The reverse displays two centrally placed prongs and a well working pin, hinge and catch assembly. It measures 3 7/8 inches tall by 1 ¾ inches wide. The badge comes housed in its issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained black leather. To the front is a round brass spring loaded push button. To the back are two plated steel, staggered, piano hinges. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a light blue fibrous felt material that outlines a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is covered in a pearl satin material above an underlying pad. It also features in gold foil: “C.E. Juncker Alte Jacobstr. 13 Berlin S.W.”. large scuffs to the exterior top. Two of the top edges have been restored. The case measures approximately 2 3/8 inches wide by 3 3/8 inches deep and 13/16 of an inch thick. A great piece!
