Cased Baden Knight 2nd Class Order of the Zähringer Lion

Orden von Zähringer Löwen Ritterkreuz 2. Klasse im Euit. Instituted December 26th 1812 by Karl Grand Duke of Baden, in memory of the Dukes of Zähringen from whom he was descended. It is a multi-piece die struck silvered and gilded nickel-silver base, multi-colored enamel and aqua glass inlay construction. The obverse features a centrally placed gilded encircled tribal symbol of the Zähringers above a pattée style aqua glass cross that has a leaf motif coming out of its corners. The reverse features a centrally placed gilded encircled Zähringer rampant lion above a translucent red background above a pattée style cross with a leaf motif to the corners. To the top is a soldered on loop and ring. It measures 1 ½ inches square. Accompanying the award is 5 3/4 inches of green and yellow rayon ribbon. The award and ribbon come housed in its appropriate issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained maroon leather. The top center features an impressed gold foil crowned royal monogram. To the front is a gilded brass rectangular spring loaded push button. To the back is a gilded steel, staggered, piano hinge. Both remain in well working condition. The interior top lid is lined in maroon satin and has an underlying pad. The bottom interior of the case is constructed out of a cardboard base that is covered in maroon fibrous felt and is removable to allow a place for the ribbon. Minor scuffs to the leather. The case measures approximately 2 3/4 inches wide by 3 5/16 inches deep and 1 inch thick. A great piece!
