Cased 1870 Cross of Merit for Women and Girls

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Stunning award… The appearance and shape is very similar to the Iron Cross, but smaller, 32.5mm. On the obverse at the junction of the arms is an emblem of the Red Cross. All the enamel remains. On the reverse there is the royal crown above intertwined monograms “A” and “W” and the date of 1870–1871 (Empress Augusta and Kaiser Wilhelm I). The cross was worn from suspended by a bow on the left chest, (sorry no ribbon included). The ribbon is the same as that of the Iron Cross for non-combatants, white with black stripes at the edge. This comes cased in a case with a perfect outline of the cross and the unique suspension loop. The final pic I have lightened to show the royal purple velvet base. The loop may be a post war Knights Cross loop and the case is a rework from a Hohenzollern House Order Knight’s Cross or Adler der Inhaber with a new insert. The price reflects this.
