Os so purchased from Johnson several years ago, I have included his description below. So he's right on with the below except I would make note that the crossguard is NOT Alcoso as I would expect. Why? I do not know but I do not mess with this stuff so I leave it as is. I'm now selling this at my pricing.

  • Tom's description: RARE 2nd Model Navy Dagger w/Dedication Blade & Personalized "Emden" Hammered Scabbard. ACS, scales (Alexander Coppel & Company Solingen) TM. Fred Stephens states in the "supplementary notes" to his facsimile reprint of The ALCOSO Sales Catalogue (Circa 1937), "that the initials A C S with Scales trademark pattern [was] commonly found on Coppel manufactured products of the late Weimar period". This dagger was possibly produced as an M-1929 1st Model Navy Dagger and up-dated with an M-1938 pommel. Gilded brass hilt fittings show minor surface wear to the highlights with much gold factory gilding remaining in the recesses of the eagle/swastika pommel and crossguard with the more square shaped quillon arms as often found on ACS marked daggers. The off-white, celluloid-over-wood grip shows light surface wear but, no visible cracks or chips, and is complete with tight twisted brass wire wrap. The polished, double-etched blade grades EX+/EX++ showing minor surface wear/runner marks with some faint gray shadowing but, no nicks to the cutting edges and no damage to the blade tip. Blade is complete with brown leather buffer pad and retains 100% of the light gray background frosting in the fouled anchor and sailing ship motif etch pattern. The obverse ricasso is personalized with the three-line inscription, "Z. Erinnerung a.d.VI.Zug Sommer 1938" (In Remembrance of Unit VI Summer 1938). The dent-free, gilded-brass, hammered scabbard shows light surface wear with virtually 100% of the matte gilding remaining in the hammered recesses, the reef knot suspension bands and scabbard throat which is retained by one, side-mounted, headless screw. Affixed to the obverse shell between the scabbard bands is a tri-sectioned shield with the coat-of-arms of the northeast German city of Emden. The coat-of-arms features a royal crown in the upper right, a large cooking pot in the lower right and the left half of an Imperial Eagle looking to the left in the left section. The original to the piece, aluminum bullion portepee grades EX++ showing light wear/age but, no fraying or damage. Research documentation included with the dagger indicates the light cruiser Emden was named after the famous First World War cruiser Emden, and was the first large ship to be built for the Reichmarine and was commissioned on 15 October 1925. From 1926 the Emden made 9 foreign cruises as a training ship. The above inscription possibly refers to one of these training cruises. Superb dagger with commemorative blade and unique personalized scabbard. EX++ (26584)
