Canadian Ross Model 1910 Mark I Bayonet

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Here we have a beautiful example of a Ross Model 1910 Mark I Bayonet. Canada formally adopted the Ross rifle in 1905. However, the Ross was not originally equipped to allow attachment of a bayonet. The bayonet was officially adopted in 1908 - although patented prior to that in 1907 - but was not issued in Canada until 1910. These bear the distinctive markings: ROSS RIFLE CO. / QUEBEC / PATENTED 1907 on the pommel, right (obverse); various acceptance/inspection marks can be found on the left side (reverse). These marks usually consist of: 2-digit date of manufacture; an "arrowhead shape in a circle," the Canadian Government Ownership Mark; a "crown over a number" is a Ross Factory Inspection mark; and an issue date, i.e. 8/10 (August 1910). The 10 inch, unfullered blade looks excellent retaining it's factory blued ricasso. The tip comes to a sharp point and the fit is perfectly secured. The blade rates an NM. The blade fits perfectly into the leather scabbard. The scabbard sits perfectly against the steel based and blackened hilt. The crossguard is straight with a step at the nussel ring. The rectangular pommel has a well working button and is profusely stamped marked. To the obverse, ROSS RIFLE CO. / QUEBEC / PATENTED 1907 on the pommel. To the reverse, very top with the inspectors stamp and arrowhead shape in a circle," the Canadian Government Ownership Mark; a "crown over a number" is a Ross Factory Inspection mark; and an issue date, 4/10 (April 1910). The two contour grip plates are tightly secured by two screw and spanner nut assemblies. They show the common unit designations to the obverse grip plate. The scabbard holds an integral looped leather frog! It is in soft supple condition. All of the stitching and staples are intact as is the steel pin to the drag. The entire thing is profusely marked. So this is the best example I have ever owned. Impossible to upgrade, what is a rare item.
