United States regulation Civil War-Vintage Heavy Cavalry Trooper's Saber by W.H. Horstmann, Philadelphia, PA. Curved 35 ¾ inch long bright blade with broad and narrow fullers. Black leather grip with twisted wire wrap, brass pommel and two-branch half basket guard with leather buffer pad. A steel scabbard with age patina, two suspension rings, top mount and drag. Obverse blade stamped with "NJ." surcharge and "keystone" stamp. These stampings identify this sword as a Type-1 M 1840, made with an Emerson & Silver blade, but sold to the state of New Jersey at approximately the start of the Civil War for use by N.J. Cavalry Militia Troopers. State Marked weapons are relatively scarce since most state militias were small and armed directly by the Federal Government when necessary, with such swords bearing the "US" acceptance marks, much more common. The M1840 was known as "Old Wristbreaker" because of its' size and weight. It was ultimately superceded by the M1860 Light Cavalry Saber. Included with this one is a Letter of Authenticity from Rick Burton at Carolina Collectors Civil War Relics.
