THE Textbook Example. This is the exact example from pages 608 and 609 of the “The Kriegsmarine Awards” Vol. II by Weber and Skora.
An Extremely Rare, 1st Pattern and 1st Variation - Das Schnellbootkriegsabzeichen by L/21 - Foerster & Barth of Pforzheim. The Fast Attack Craft War Badge was awarded to worthy individuals who had served in twelve combat engagements on fast attack craft or torpedo boats, other special circumstances may grant the award as well. The S- Boat Badge design was changed on January 28, 1943, from the earlier 1st pattern (S-30 boat) to the 2nd pattern (S-38 boat). The badge is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been blackened, silver washed and gold gilded. The obverse depicts an S-boat (S-30 type) breaking through the sea below a kriegsmarine eagle (with out-stretched wings, clutching a swastika within its talons), which is then all encompassed by a laurel leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The full back reverse is clearly maker marked “L/21”. It also features the correct tombak; soldered on block hinge, soldered on flatwire catch and coke bottle pin, along with the soldered on vertically placed round wire top hook. The details throughout the ship, waves and eagle are very nice! It measures 2 ¼ inches tall by 1 ¾ inches wide. A very rare and TEXTBOOK piece!
