Interesting Japanese Naval Dirk

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Here's an interesting example of an 1883 patterned Imperial Japanese Naval Officer Dirk. The single fullered blade on this one is a nice example. It has some minor age towards the tip. The fit is good and the tip is perfectly pointed! The blade rates Exc++. The blade measures approx 8 1/4 inches long,(measured from the habaki). The saya (scabbard) is wood based and covered in poilished shark-skin. There is some wear and skin loss but still certainly better than 90% coverage. The saya has two brass based scalloped fittings. They show wonderful detail with several leaves and cherry blossoms throughout. Both screws are intact. The top clip works well! The ferrule, pommel cap and crossguard are also brass based. They are nicely detailed with random pebbling a cherry blossom and leaves. The grip is tightly triple brass wire wrapped, over a white pebbled ray skin. All three original wires remain tightly intact. Finally there is a piece of cotton material sewn to the scabbard ring. It has some kanji, "横手町新板松井保三郎" Yokote-cho Shinita Matsui Yasusaburō meaning, "横手町 [Yokote Town] is now 横手市 [Yokote City] and is located in Akita. Many thanks Guy for your help with this one. A good example of a Japanese Naval dirk
