Cased Imperial Prussian Commemorative Flyer Badge

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Preußen Flieger-Erinnerungsabzeichen im Etui by an unknown maker. Instituted January 27th 1914 by Kaiser and King Wilhelm II. It was awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers who, in case of mobilization, were no longer considered and no longer intended for use. The badge was intended as a replacement for the military pilot badge and the badge for observation officers. Prerequisite for the issue of the Flyer memorial badge was a prior at least 3-year use and leadership in the lists. It is constructed out of a two-piece 800 silver content base that has been burnished. The oval shaped obverse features a cut out flying eagle above a landscape of mountains and buildings that is all surrounded by a half oak leaf and acorn (right), half laurel leaf and berry wreath (left) that is tied together at the bottom with a bowtie ribbon and is all underneath a Prussian style crown. The recessed full back reverse of the badge features; an “800” silver content mark, two vent holes (top and bottom), a soldered on barrel/block hinge, a soldered on round wire catch and a rounded wire pin. All of the components continue to work well. The badge measures 1 ¾ inches wide by 2 11/16 inches tall. The badge shows wonderful patina and gorgeous detail. It comes housed in its appropriate issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a teal simulated leatherette. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a blue velvet material that outlines the pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is constructed out of a pearl satin material and has an underlying pad and is underneath the manufacturer marking “Singer & Halberstaedter Juweliere Berlin W. 66 Leipziger-Strasse 123a Ecke Wilhelmstr.”. Amazingly the cloth hinge remains intact. The exterior shows minor scuffs. Singer & Halberstaedter was a silver jeweler so this could provide some insight to an unknown maker… For more information see page 328-329 of Previtera’s “Imperial Sky Flight Badges of The Imperial German & Bavarian Armies”. A unique opportunity to purchase a one of a kind textbook example…
