DRL Roller Hockey Winner Non-Portable Award 1938

A Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen III Reichssieger im Rollhockey nichttragbare Siegerplakette 1938 - Ortsgruppe Darmstadt. This would have been awarded to the winners of the 1938 Roller Hockey Tournament. It is constructed out of a carved amber and injection molded celluloid base. The round shaped obverse features, in white, the DRL emblem (a centrally placed mobile swastika above the chest of a closed winged eagle) surrounded by a bordered amber exterior. The full back reverse reads, in gold foil: “Dem III Reichssieger im Rollhockey 1938” (The Third Reich Winner in Roller Hockey in 1938) on an amber base. It measures 2 1/8 inches in diameter. The non-portable award sits perfectly in its issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained green faux leatherette. To the front is a tombak based green enamel painted mushroom head spring loaded push button. To the back is a gilded steel, staggered, piano hinge. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a black velvet felt material that has a recess for the award with a black rayon string. The interior top is constructed out of a pearl satin material that is marked, in black gothic style ink with a RL emblem and “Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen Ortsgruppe Darmstadt”, above an underlying pad. The interior hinge shows minor pulling. The exterior shows typical age wear and the top portion of the leatherette that covers the hinge is lost to time. The case measures 3 inches wide and deep and 11/16 of an inch thick. A very rare piece!
