SS Dagger by Carl Eickhorn 1936

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

A Model 1933 Schutzstaffel Dienstdolch by Carl Eickhorn of Solingen - SS Contract Number 941/36/SS. This is a very interesting example which is “double proofed”. It has the initial very early large double oval Eickhorn trademark and just below it is a smaller style RZM circle with the SS contract number “941/36/SS”. Now look carefully at this etch. See how the RZM mark is of a differing artificial patination and depth? So this is right as rain, for you guys who check me against the references, see Witty's reference pg 167. It is believed that these daggers were returned by the original owners to have the Rohm, inscription factory removed and were not reissued till 1936. In order to be in compliance with the 1936 regulations they had to have the RZM added. You tend to find this similar feature on early Hitler Youth Knives with the added RZM code. The blade on this one looks good! The acid etched “Meine Ehre Heißt Treue” motto and double oval “C.E. Carl Eickhorn Solingen” maker mark and “RZM 941/36/SS” are all dark, crisp and beautifully executed! The crossgrain remains visible as you shine it against the light. The fit and tip are both perfect. The blade rates Exc++. It has been cleaned and shows surface scratches/runner marks throughout. The scabbard on this one is steel based and black anodized. It has some oxidization spotting thoughout. It shows surface scratches to the length of it where it also has had an attempt at cleaning. It remains completely dent free. The nickel silver based scalloped scabbard fittings are in great shape. The ball has a few bumps yet remains mostly round. All four screws are there, one is a replacement. The scabbard to crossguard fit is near perfect. The nickel silver based crossguards look excellent! The lower side is bench marked “5” and there is no district stamp which is what you would expect to see on these very early Eickhorn’s. The crossguard to grip fits are poor. The grip is black died hardwood. It is in great shape with only minor pressure marks, some flake chips to the reverse top and one hairline crack below the roundel. The nickel silver eagle is crisp, wonderfully detailed and has a perfect fit. The SS roundel retains 99%+ of its enamel and also has a perfect fit! A great “textbook” example!
