German Medal of Merit in Bronze

A 2nd Pattern (1943-45) - Deutsche Verdienstmedaille in Bronze. The Order of Merit of the German Eagle, was instituted May 1st 1937 (Reorganized April 29th 1939 and December 27th 1943), and was awarded by Hitler to foreign nationals who had made a meritorious contribution to the German Reich on the recommendation of the Reich Minister for Foreign Affairs. It is constructed out of die struck zinc base that has been bronze washed. The round shaped obverse features a Maltese style cross that has four national eagles (Hoheitszeichen) between each of the crosses arms on a smooth round background. The reverse features reads: “Deutsche Verdienstemedaille” on a smooth round background. To the top is an integral loop and ring. The ring holds a tri-color (red, white and black) rayon ribbon (with the center white stripe). To the back of the ribbon is a stitched on, well working, brass pin assembly. The award has lost its bronze finish and there is a weak point to the ribbon where the ring is. It measures 1 ½ inches in diameter.
