This group attributed to a “J.A. Mattei” of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. When I purchased it from my picker it all came in a “B167 I FL/C 1944” marked ammunition box, (painted red to the front and top). The box has “Mattei” to the top, the duffle bag is hand inscribed “Mattei. J. A.” and “B-Ib 3577” and the Blouse is marked “JM”. The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division “Glengarrians Canada” Battledress Tunic is dated 1945. With a two-year service sleeve chevron and a Maple Leaf (60+ days of Overseas Service) to the Volunteer Service Medal, there is a good chance this guy fought in D-Day. The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division served extensively in the Battle of Normandy as a component firstly of I British Corps and later under the command of II Canadian Corps. The Blouse shows Minor mothing. The ribbon bar features: The France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 War Medal, 1939-1945 Defense Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Maple Leaf (Overseas Service). Included is a partial medal bar with the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal secured. The 1941 “Brodie” MK I Steel Helmet is by General Steel Wares of Toronto. It is marked to the inside lip: “G.S.W. A.C. MKI 1941”. It has a beautiful camouflage netting. The black leather liner is deteriorating. Minor oxidization to the inside. The Beret is dated 1945, sized 7 ¾ and is by the “Grand Mere Knitting Company Limited”. It shows minor mothing. The “Housewife” Sewing kit is C-Broadarrow-marked to the outside and is also stamped to the inside flap (illegible). Included inside is a roll of white cotton string/rope, a thimble, a wax block and three needles in a paper packet. The issue shoe brush is marked with the Canadian Broad Arrow and is maker marked (illegible) to the edge. It is hand scratched in “B38594” to the top. It comes with an issue “Cigarettes” tin with a pack of MACDONALDS Gold Standard Export Cigarettes. There is a Canadian Shaving Kit with Gillette blade and Mirror. Two P37 Webbed Equipment Braces. One dated 1941 and one dated 1942. A Prophylactic Unit - "V-Packette" Prophylactic Unit by John Wyeth & Brothers (Canada) Ltd. Misc. Straps. Booklets include: “Battledress Ballads 3 Canadian Infantry Division”, “This Army” Vol. 2, a France book (No Cover) and a Netherlands booklet. A Newspaper Toronto Daily Star Monday May 7 1945 “Surrender Unconditional”, French leaflet and German artwork. There are 19 photos. Some appear to be his daughter and wife along with family and buildings. An interesting piece more to discover I am sure!
