A Kreigsmarine Flottenkriegsabzeichen by Friedrich Orth of Wien - Variation II. The Navy High Seas Fleet Badge was awarded for service to the crews of battleships, cruisers and other supporting naval ships who met the specific award criteria (along with those who were killed in action). It is constructed out of a die-struck zinc base that has been gold gilded and chemically blackened. The obverse depicts a frontal view of a battle ship, cutting through waves, which is below a Kriegsmarine eagle (with out-stretched wings clutching a mobile swastika within its talons) and is surrounded by an oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The concave full-back reverse is maker marked: “Fo”. It also displays the correct; integral catch and hinge along with a steel roung wire pin. The zinc has absorbed the gilding. It measures 2 1/4 inches high by 1 ¾ inches wide. Just purchased from the veteran’s family.
