A 3. Stufe Nahkampfspange des Heers in Gold by Friedrich Linden of Lüdenscheid - 2nd Pattern. The Gold III Stage Close Combat Clasp was awarded for 50 close combat battles. To any solider that was awarded the Gold Combat Clasp he would also automatically be awarded the German Cross in Gold, without delay. An estimated 631 Gold Combat Clasps were awarded. The Gold Close Combat Clasp is the highest infantry award and was often regarded in higher esteem than the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been gold gilded and covered in a brennlack finish. The obverse depicts a crossed model 24 grenade and K98 bayonet with oak leaves, acorns and lined rays all beneath a German national eagle. The reverse of the badge is correctly maker marked: “Fec. W. E. Peekhaus Berlin” and “FLL”. It also displays; a soldered-on oval plate c-shaped catch, a block hinge and a rectangular pin with a crimped gilded backplate. The pin and likely hinge-pin have been replaced. The original gold finish has mostly been absorbed by the zinc. It measures 3 7/8 inches wide by 1 inch tall. A very prestigious award! It comes with a COA from Niemann.
