United States, WWII – Purple Heart, Not numbered. The Purple Heart was awarded for being wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces. It is constructed out of a die struck brass base that has been gold gilded and contains multi-colored enamel work. The heart shaped obverse features the left facing profile of General George Washington, on top of a purple heart and golden border, below the George Washington coat of arms flanked by two laurel leaf branches. The reverse, in only golden color, reads: “For Military Merit”, below the coat of arms and branches. To the top is a rectangular ball loop and rectangular ring which holds a purple and white ribbon. To the reverse is a rectangular bar that has a soldered-on pin, hinge and catch assembly. The award measures 1 3/8 inches wide by 1 ¾ inches tall. An iconic award.
