The Ewald Cleff Waffenfabrik company began in 1867. It registered with the Solingen commercial authorities on April 14, 1885. Cleff specialized in producing: officer swords and sabers, honor and presentation swords, sidearms, bayonets and daggers. Cleff also did fine etchings and Damascus blades. The business was owned by Richard Cleff in 1900. By 1914, it was owned by his widow Lydia and from 1928-1930 by Richard Cleff. In 1939, ownership had reverted to Lydia Cleff. In 1922, Cleff was also manufacturing cutlery, specifically marketed to hotels. Some hunting style knives were also made early on. Ewald Cleff received its RZM license on October 22, 1938. In 1939, the company was located on Kasernenstraße 29. During the Third Reich era, Cleff manufactured: swords, police bayonets, SA daggers and HJ knives among some other pieces. The business ceased trading in 1966.
