The German Democratic Republic (GDR or DDR - Deutsche Demokratische Republik) was founded on October 7, 1949. The National People's Army (NVA - Nationale Volksarmee) was established on March 1, 1956, from the forerunner Barracked People's Police (KVP - Kasernierte Volkspolizei). The NVA had four main branches: the Ground Forces (Landstreitkräfte), the People's Navy (Volksmarine), the Air Defence (Luftstreitkräfte/Luftverteidigung) and the Border Troops (Grenztruppen der DDR). In the 1950's there were newly introduced; Uniform Insignia, Service Career Badges (Laufbahnabzeichen), Classification Badge (Klassifizierungsabzeichen) and Orders, Medals and Military Decorations. The honor dagger of the NVA (NVA Ehrendolch) was introduced in 1961 for officers, generals and admirals. The new system of various decorations that was inspired by those of the USSR. The GDR was disbanded and peacefully reunited with Germany on October 3, 1990.
