Bavarian 2nd Class Military Merit Cross with Swords

Bayerischer Militär-Verdienstorden 2. Klasse mit Schwertern. The Bavarian Military Merit Cross was established July 19th 1866 by King Ludwig II and was awarded to enlisted soldiers for acts of bravery and military merit (with swords). It is constructed out of a multi-piece die struck bronze base that has been silver washed. The obverse features a separately soldered on roundel which depicts a centrally placed stylized “L” (King Ludwig) below a king’s crown on a smooth round enamel which is surrounded by a bordered “Merenti” (Merit) to the top and an ornate belt to the bottom. The roundel is on top of a pebbled Maltese style cross that is below two crossed broad swords. The reverse roundel depicts a rampant lion which is surrounded by a bordered “1866” (institution date) to the top and an ornate belt to the bottom. The top features a decorative attachment device a ball loop and a ring. We have no ribbon. The award measures 2 inches tall by 1 11/16 inches wide. A great piece!
