A Deutsches Kurland Ärmelstreifen - Type I. Introduced in March 12, 1945, the Kurland Cufftitle was awarded to personnel who; had participated in at least three Kurland (Courland) Battles, had been wounded in a combat operation or had served at least three honorable months of service. A total of six battles occurred in Kurland form October 13, 1944 to March 31, 1945. The “Kurland” Army Group held back the Russians the Kurland peninsula remaining unconquered, despite heavy losses, until the total capitulation of Germany on May 9, 1945. The Kurland Cufftitle was the fourth and final Cufftitle in a series of four campaign awards: Kreta, Afrika, Metz and Kurland. It is constructed out of a machine embroidered silver/grey rayon base with black cotton script. The obverse reads: “Kurland” and is flanked by the Grand Masters of the Order of the Teutonic Knights (left) and a stylized profile of an elk’s head which was the coat-of-arms of Mitau (right), borded to the top and bottom in a dual black dotted/lined pattern. The reverse shows the edges having been folded over and stitched together. Age toning and soilage. It measures 7 ¾ inches wide by 1 ½ inches tall. A rare and desirable piece! It comes with a COA from Niemann.
