The Aesculap-Werke, vormals Jetter & Scheerer, company traces its beginnings back to Gottfried Jetter in 1867. In 1899, the brand name became AESCULAP was registered. Come WWI, peaceful operations ended and manufacturing was almost entirely devoted to supplying the armed forces especially with medical equipment and some combat knives. By the Weimar Republic and Great Depression, Aesculap specialized in cutlery; bread, meat and vegetable knives; hairdressing equipment; and parts for the automotive industry. With the introduction of stainless steel, a renewed demand came about for surgical instruments and Aesculap's fortunes revived. Come the Third Reich era, Aesculap made dress bayonets and SA daggers along with scalpels and medical equipment. In 1935, Aesculap did not receive an RZM license. From 1945 to 1946 the factory was occupied by French troops. Since the war Aesculap has regained its former glory. Aesculap is now a Division of B.
