Gebr. Berns, Otter, Solingen


The Gebrüder Berns Otterwerk, Stahlwarenfabrik, company traces its beginnings back to 1840 with the Berns brothers. The Otter brand name was registered in 1899. Edmund and Reinhard Berns were listed as the owners in 1914. The 1922 Solingen und sein Industriebezirk advertisement above lists their specialty in pocket knives. Berns also concentrated on the sale of: cutlery, knives, pocket knives and manicure articles. On October 6, 1926, Berns registered with the Solingen chamber of commerce. Come the Third Reich era, Berns made early SA daggers-Fisher estimates 3,000. By 1939, Reinhard Berns was the sole owner, while the firm was located at Neuen-hoferstrasse 15 in Solingen-Höhscheid. The business remained there until 1986 when it ceased trading. The Otter trademark was then acquired by cutler Rainer Morsbach in 1989. He created the "Otter-Messer" company that remains in business to this day.
